Feel like you got to the #party a little late? Here’s our hashtag primer.

Hashtags have become a necessary tool for marketing. They serve an important role in finding clients. Hashtags act as links on social media that you can use to add yourself/your brand to the global conversation.

The Basics

So what exactly is a hashtag? Hashtags are just pound signs, but when put before a word — virtually any word — they become clickable links that take users from the initial post to thousands of posts using that same hashtag. Think of it as weeding out the loudness of social media and zeroing in on the exact through-line you want.

For example, if a client is searching for shoes to buy, they may search #womensshoes on Twitter, bringing all of the tweets including that hashtag into one central place. They can then find major shoe brands, local shoe stores, and shoe recommendations from users all over the world.

But might that be good for your business? Future clients who might have otherwise not come across your business will be able to find you at the search of a hashtag. It’s the simplest of marketing strategies. All you need to do is include the right number and right kind of hashtags to make yourself visible without becoming a spam account. This brings us to our next point…

How Many Is Too Many Hashtags?

Ah yes, spam accounts. You know, those accounts that post an extensive list of irrelevant hashtags, just to maximize their hits? For example, a sportswear Instagram account may post a picture of an athlete in running shorts, and then proceed to use the following hashtags: #exercise #running #swimming #water #ocean #fish #jellyfish #whales #endangeredspecies.

That is what not to do. As long as you stay on track and avoid lengthy hashtag tangents, then you’re set. Otherwise, it makes for an unnecessarily long list of things users don’t want to read! Instagram allows you to use 30 hashtags per post, while Twitter allows however many will fit within the boundaries of their character limit. That said, the perfect hashtag number on Instagram is well under 30. Forbes recommends using around 11 hashtags, max, underneath every Instagram post to get the most foot traffic. They also recommend using 2 hashtags for every Twitter post. Any more will actually decrease the popularity of a tweet. So, with Twitter, less is more. As for LinkedIn and Facebook, hashtags are still gaining use on the platforms. Check other accounts in your industry to see their hashtag style and quantity.

What Kinds of Hashtags Should You Use for Your Business?

Researching other businesses on social media that are similar to yours will show you the kinds of hashtags typically used. According to Social Media Examiner, there are three different kinds of hashtags you want within each post:

  • Popular hashtags: This will get you out into mainstream media and help browsing users find you more easily.
  • Niche-specific hashtags: This will attract the core clientele who are looking for the specific things your business does.
  • Branded hashtags: Creating a hashtag for your brand will help on the campaign-front, adding to your unique brand.

Social media is the way of the world these days and knowing the ins-and-outs will definitely keep your brand in front of your audience. But with so many different platforms to choose from, and changes in the digital world every day, it can be hard to keep up. That’s why working with an agency to focus consistently on your online presence is important.

Below are 8 of the most important things to remember when it comes to social media:

  • Set your goals
  • Identify your audience
  • Select the best platforms (where does your audience hang out online?)
  • Employ a qualified content manager or team
  • Consistency, in terms of posting with regularity, is key
  • Know that content-wise, viewers prefer quality over quantity
  • Measure results
  • Do it all over again!

LDM studies the patterns, educating our team each day to take the best possible approach for each client. Maybe your in-house team is capable of implementing the posts on your own, but you might need some help with strategy and content creation — or maybe it’s the other way around. LDM is here to help!

And then there’s social media advertising, both for geo-targeting and geo-interest targeting. They both offer great ROI for a relatively low spend. Curious about this but don’t know how to begin? Get in touch with us or learn more about all the services we offer.

Summer Days Are Ending, But We’re Still On A Roll

by Alissa Gouveia

As the Summer days are quickly coming to an end, we realize time really does fly when you’re having fun! We’re consistently finishing up deliverables for our clients that we are oh-so proud of! Below are a just a few.

Build Upon a Great Foundation

Success starts with a great foundation! LDM is so happy that we were able to do just that with the website design and development for our B2B client Cell-Crete Corporation, leading specialty concrete contractors of the Western US. We’re thrilled to have created an upgraded, analytics-integrated online platform for Cell-Crete along with email campaigns. As we set the groundwork to further build up Cell-Crete’s online visibility, our inaugural ecommuncations eblast has already boosted their website visits by 400%. Visit the website here.

LLBA’s Mission for the Latina Legal Community

We are excited to have put together a new, much-improved website design and development for our long-term non-profit client, the Latina Lawyers Bar Association (LLBA). Their mission of creating a strong community to support Latinas in all stages of their legal careers is incredibly powerful; we knew that we needed to create an online solution that spoke volumes, which is exactly what we did. Check out the website here.

Access Means Success

The Access workforce development program at Facebook creates economic opportunity for Facebook’s neighbors, and is a pillar of their community engagement efforts.

LDM was tapped to brand the endeavor (garnering a GDUSA national design award in the process), and then build the program’s online presence in WordPress VIP (the enterprise level of WordPress).

Through resume-writing and interview skills workshops, Access is giving its community the tools needed in order to thrive. LDM is happy to have made this even easier by creating a website that’s efficient and quick to navigate.

View the website here.

Teachers — Great By Design

We’ve recently been given the opportunity to work with Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE), on a campaign that gives SCOE teachers the recognition they deserve. LDM created several different graphic design layouts for busback transit ads that utilize real teachers as the heroes of the campaign. Shown are some examples of our work!

Hilary being sworn in

Founder and Creative Director Hilary Lentini, of Lentini Design & Marketing, proudly supports women-owned businesses and small businesses. She’s deeply invested in creating employment and skill development opportunities for the next generation. From her tenure as President of the National Association of Women Business Owners Los Angeles Chapter (NAWBO-LA), Hilary realized that advocacy was another passion for her, and that she wanted to continue her volunteer leadership efforts. She set her sights on influencing public policy at the state level and applied for state commission work.

In May of 2018 she was honored with an appointment by Governor Brown to serve on the California Workforce Development Board. Hilary shares, “Statistically speaking, small businesses are the entities creating jobs and growing the workforce. I look forward to supporting the Board’s efforts in forging access for the under-employed to careers and entrance into the global economy, helping those individuals who possess the capacity but who’ve lacked the opportunity. With my business background in the education sector, non-profit sector, and public sector clients’ workforce development and career training programs, I feel well-suited to contribute to the Board’s important work.”

About the California Workforce Development Board (CWDB)

The CWDB is dedicated to:

  • Helping individuals — particularly those with barriers to employment and educational opportunities — attain demand-driven skills, job training and education to pursue career pathways and compete in the global economy
  • Enhancing regional economic growth by building regional partnerships between industry leaders, workforce professionals, education and training providers, and economic development leaders

What to Know About Social Media

Social media is a valuable marketing tool, but to reach its full potential it must be used correctly. One thing we know for sure is that you have to keep pace with changes to the platforms. For example, the days of simply posting content for free and receiving high engagement are numbered. Feed algorithms on all major platforms have either recently or are working on a more transparent approach for their users. This means most professionally branded content will need to be paid or “sponsored.” In addition, sponsored content will be allocated differently than before in any given user’s feed. To position your brand and to optimize your efforts in the space, we have the biggest trends to be aware of for social media in 2018.

Video Content is Still Strong

Video is still the preferred content type for engagement. While Instagram is seeing an uptick in boosted posts, you can still use the Stories feature to reach new audiences. Bonus — it’s still free! The best part of this, you can add in links on your posts for this Instagram feature. For a platform that is usually shy with the link opportunities, this is gold. Organic reach isn’t impossible on this platform but it will be a harder mountain to climb in the year ahead. If you want to stay ahead of trends, learning how to optimize your marketing with paid advertising is the best route. At the very least, get comfortable with that camera! Short and sweet is all you need to stand out in a social media feed.

Reaching Your Prime Audience

It’s more important than ever to be familiar with your analytics on any channel. Your content needs to be personalized for your prime demographic, and to understand how to engage with them you need to know who they are. Factors like the best time to post, message engagement, and tone are all important. Even if you’re not typically a “numbers” brand — this is the time to familiarize yourself with the engagement data for your social media presence. It could mean a world of difference.

Influencers Are Still a Big Deal

Influencers are important, but they must be utilized correctly or don’t bother. According to Twitter, 40% of its users claim higher engagement due to influencers. You don’t have to go top of the line either. Even “micro-influencers” (influencers with only 1000+ followers) can help move the needle of your business’ visibility while allowing you to reserve some of your budget for other marketing efforts.

Facebook: Pay-To-Play

In case you haven’t heard, Facebook has (yet again) changed its algorithm for its user newsfeed. The only option available for free content is the Explore Feed, leaving main newsfeeds free for only friend posts or sponsored posts. Basically, if you’re not paying you’re pushed to the side. This means Facebook is now operating like any pay-to-play channel— yes, like TV or radio. The good news? Facebook has some of the most precise ad targeting tools available. While it will cost you to rise above the noise, any ad buys and even boosted posts are sure to be worth the budget.

If you really want to up your presence in any or all of these channels, having professional help (like LDM) can really make a difference. We’d love to lead your efforts and get your brand noticed.
